Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse football team takes on the Louisville Cardinals at 8 p.m. Saturday in the first sporting event in the newly named JMA Wireless Dome.
The game will be televised on ACC Network.

Final: Syracuse 31, Louisville 7
Fourth quarter
Syracuse drive starts 3:48 at own 35:
Syracuse has 3:48 of clock left to run out in this one. The four-minute offense is on to melt it away.
Tucker picks up another first down and comes off the field to a standing ovation. He finishes with 98 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and add another touchdown and 85 yards on six catches. That’s a day.
Louisville drive starts 8:34 at own 22:
Garrett Williams blankets the receiver in coverage but gets him down after a modest gain to move the chains. SU has tackled well tonight on Cunningham and the receivers. Gave up a few chunk plays, but hard to be disappointed in the defensive effort tonight against one of the league’s top offensive players.
Marlowe Wax and Mikel Jones have been great in the middle. The defensive backs have been physical. The young defensive linemen have splashed at times.
Jones pops the ball loose from Cunningham but has his celebration stopped short because of cramping.
Stefon Thompson’s injury status is the big question moving forward with pass-happy Purdue lurking in a couple weeks.

Syracuse drive starts 12:25 at Louisville 25:
Tucker gets inside the 20 to set up 3rd-and-short, then moves the chains.
Anae feeds it to Tucker, who scampers out of bounds at the 5-yard line. At worst, SU running clock here in a three-possession game.
Shrader lowers his shoulder into two defenders to fight for the end zone. He’s stopped just short, but it’s first-and-goal and more clock runs.
Shrader easily runs it in after surveying the field. He gets his first rushing touchdown on the day and his third score overall.
Louisville drive starts 13:02 at own 25:
Syracuse’s defense comes away with its third turnover of the game. Steve Linton forced and recovered a fumble on Cunningham to set SU up deep in Louisville territory.

Tucker takes it down the 2-yard line, and couple plays later, Shrader lobs one out to Gadsden, who releases late into the end zone for the decisive blow.
Third quarter
END OF 3RD QUARTER: Syracuse 17, Louisville 7
Syracuse drive starts: 0:23 remaining in quarter
Tucker gets outside to the 5-yard line, and we’re headed to the fourth quarter.
Louisville drive starts: 2:37 remaining in quarter
The trainers are out to look at linebacker Marlowe Wax, who has been outstanding tonight. He’s up quick and running off the field shaking out his right hand.
Derek McDonald drops into coverage and intercepts Cunningham, returning it inside the Louisville 15-yard like
Syracuse can go for the knockout blow.
Syracuse drive starts: 4:54 remaining in quarter
Coming out of the turnover, Shrader uses his legs to pick up a first down, though the play is reviewed.
Tucker then picks up a combined 17 yards on back-to-back carries. The drive stalls out on a long throw down the field to Damien Alford that he can’t locate.
Louisville hanging around.
Louisville drive starts: 7:23 remaining in quarter
Cunningham finds Ahmari Huggins-Bruce for chunk gain that covers 45 yards out across midfield.
Tiyon Evans now banging on some of SU’s defensive reserves.
Garrett Williams comes over the top on Cunningham’s deep ball into the end zone and intercepts it for a game-changing play late in the third quarter.
That’s twice SU’s defense has snuffed out scoring chances down on its end of the field. The goal-line stand in the first half kept the margin at 10, and so did Williams’ interception.
Syracuse drive starts: 10:42 remaining in quarter
The Orange opened the second half backed up on its own goal line but moved the ball out near midfield before punting it away.
Max Von Marburg, the freshman from Australia, comes out for his second appearance of the night.
Earlier in the half, Syracuse’s defense loses contain on Cunningham on third down to open the second half, and the quarterback coasts for an easy conversion.
Marlowe Wax pops into the backfield late to bottle up Cunningham, and Okechukwu brings him down to force a Louisville punt.
Halftime: Syracuse 17, Louisville 7
The injury status of Sean Tucker is the top takeaway from the first half, but Syracuse has otherwise looked good in its opener.
It has contained Malik Cunningham on the ground and limited the big plays through the air.
A monster goal-line stop by the defense after SU pulled ahead by 10 stands as a clear turning point in the first half.
Offensively, Garrett Shrader has led the new-look offense by completing 14-of-17 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. He has also covered 59 yards on the ground.
Tucker exited the game in the second quarter with a lower-body injury. He rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown and added another 80 receiving yards, including a 55-yard catch and run for the season’s first touchdown.
Second quarter
Syracuse drive starts w/ 1:01 remaining at its Louisville 46-yard line:
Syracuse moving backward here at the end of the half.
All in all, a promising half by the offense is quelled by Elmore and Tucker exiting the game early.
Defensively, a huge goal-line stop has preserved a 10-point halftime lead.
Louisville drive starts w/ 1:54 remaining at its own 14-yard line:
Big open-field tackle by Rob Hanna, but Stefon Thompson now getting medical attention on the sideline.
Thompson is the third starter to come out of the game because of injury here in the first half.
Max Mang assumed Chris Elmore’s role as the lead blocker. LeQuint Allen came on for Tucker. Derek McDonald stands ready as Thompson is helped off the field by support staff.
Louisville offensive lineman Renato Brown has been disqualified after review for targeting on an illegal block.
Syracuse’s defense rises again to bottle up the Cardinals’ ground game. They will punt with 1:13 left in the half.
Trebor Pena returns the punt out across midfield. Syracuse with 1:01 to work with before halftime.
Syracuse drive starts w/ 5:10 remaining at its own 4-yard line:
Shrader finds Gadsen on a short pass over the middle to move the chains.
Shrader goes back over the middle to Jones, who breaks a tackle and gets out near midfield.
Sean Tucker is down on the field at the 3:19 mark. Oh boy.
Tucker is a little hobbly but walking off the field on his own strength. Tucker is walking gingerly down the sideline, being watched carefully from behind by the team physician. He just went into the medical tent.
Shrader dumps off a couple throws to LeQuint Allen. He’s stopped well short of the first-down marker, and SU’s drive stalls after Tucker leaves the game.
Syracuse, driving near midfield and leading by 10 at the time of Tucker’s injury, will put.
Louisville drive starts w/ 10:13 remaining:
Louisville is out across midfield here on a 12-yard rush by Jordan.
Scott Satterfield then opens up the bag of tricks, as Braden Smith takes the pitch and passes it downfield to Tyler Hudson. His catch and run places the ball inside the 5-yard line.
SU’s defense comes up big on the goal line. A stop by Marlowe Wax on an option keeper by Cunningham preceded a false start penalty that pushed the ball back to the 7-yard line. Now Louisville will talk it over.
Cunningham throws it away on second down and gets 6 yards back on a third-down run to set up 4th-and-goal. The crowd noise forces the Cardinals to take another timeout here at the 5:16 mark.

SU’s defense shuts the door. Stefon Thompson and Marlowe Waxe bottle up Cunningham.
SCORE: Syracuse 17, Louisville 7; with 10:25 remaining in the second quarter
Shrader comes out in the second quarter with a deep ball to Isaiah Jones, who can’t complete the catch in bounds.
Shrader more than makes up for it, picking up 33 yards on the ground and adding a 15-yard completion to Cooper to set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Tucker.
Shrader is 10-for-12 for 144 yards and a touchdown. He’s added a team-high 58 yards on the ground.
Tucker, who has scored both Orange touchdowns, is over 100 all-purpose yards thanks in part to a 55-yard catch and run.
First quarter
END OF FIRST QUARTER: SYRACUSE 10, LOUISVILLE 7
Syracuse drive starts 1:10:
Shrader picks up 9 yards on the first play of the drive. His helmet comes off again on the next play, and Del Rio-Wilson has to come in again on another third down. He hands it to Tucker and keeps the drive alive.
Shrader in the first quarter: 7-for-8, 125 yards and touchdown to Tucker. Also lost his helmet twice.

Louisville drive starts 4:54:
Lockett and Steve Linton on the field for the Orange’s second defensive series.
Cunningham finds his tight end Marshon Ford in the flat, then falls forward for a first down on 3rd-and-short.
With a clean pocket, Cunningham delivers a strike to the SU 40-yard line on a 18-yard completion to Tyler Hudson.
Tiyon Evans breaks free for a 36-yard touchdown run, Alijah Clark will be flagged for a horse collar tackle.
SCORE: Syracuse 10, Louisville 0; with 5:01 remaining in quarter
Syracuse drive start: 6:47
Syracuse with a couple false starts here on the offensive line. Devaugn Cooper’s 23-yard catch is good for a first down. Shrader goes back to Cooper on the next play, then Tucker gets chopped down for a 5-yard gain but another first down.
Chris Elmore is down on the field after the play, with Babers, strength coach Sean Edinger and training staff out checking on him. Elmore, one of the team’s captains, is helped to his feet and being helped off the field by support staff.
On the next play, Tucker breaks loose for a 55-yard catch and run from Shrader.
Louisville drive start: 9:41: Here’s our first look at Malik Cunningham against the SU defense.
Kevon Darton gets the start at defensive tackle, flanked by Caleb Okechukwu and Jatius Geer. Terry Lockett is dressed on the sideline.
After an early first down, Geer gets some pressure on Cunningham, who throws it away.
A key false start penalty on Louisville leads to 3rd-and-6 becoming 3rd-and-11 and a stop for the defense. Louisville will punt.

Syracuse moves the ball effectively on its opening series, but a bit of misfortune costs it in the red zone.
Quarterback Garrett Shrader had his helmet knocked off on a scramble, removing him from the game for one play.
It was a big one: 3rd-and-14.
Backup Carlos Del Rio-Wilson dumps it off to Sean Tucker, who was stopped well short of the first down.
Andre Szmyt’s 31-yard field goal attempt is good.
Earlier in the drive, Garrett Shrader hits Courtney Jackson on a comeback to pick up an early first down on the drive. Shrader then scrambles out across the 40-yard in Louisville to keep the chains moving.
Shrader on the money on a completion to Oronde Gadsden. Shrader is 2-for-2 for 25 yards here on the opening drive.
Shrader’s swing pass to Tucker is close to another first down, as the Orange is inside the Cardinals’ 20-yard line.
On 3rd-and-4, Louisville is flagged for offsides.
Louisville won the coin toss and will defer to the second half. Syracuse will get the ball first.

Pregame
Update: Syracuse is on the field for warmups. Wide receivers Isaiah Jones and Anthony Queeley are both out running routes. Both players missed time in camp as a result of injury.
Safeties Jason Simmons Jr. and Aman Greenwood will not play tonight. Neither are dressed for the game. Simmons is still recovering from an injury that sidelined him during camp.
Quarterback Justin Lamson (lower-leg), defensive back Cornell Perry and defensive lineman Josh Hough also aren’t dressed.

This is the Cardinals’ first true road opener since 2005(!) and their first visit to this building since the 2018 season.
Recent matchups in this series since both joined the ACC have been one-sided margins, with Louisville dominating the win-loss record.
Syracuse thinks this year will be different. For one, it’s September and not November, when the Orange has typically been short-handed because of injuries.
Both programs have undergone coaching changes and are led by new offensive coordinators: Lance Taylor comes over from Notre Dame. He’s got group a linemen up front that mauls people in the run game, and a dynamic dual-threat quarterback in Malik Cunningham. It’ll be a challenge for SU’s green defensive front.
The Orange counters with Virginia transplants Robert Anae and Jason Beck, who bring the Air Raid offense in to get SU’s passing game fixed.
Former Syracuse running back Jawhar Jordan is listed as the Cardinals’ top kick and punt returner. The speedy back is also listed as the team’s No. 2 tailback behind Tennessee transfer Tiyon Evans.
