If you would like a free version of the B/X rules (with some very minor changes in order to cover legal issues, specifically spell progression rates for clerics and magic-users), you should check out Labyrinth Lord.
The Basic Fantasy RPG is even more free (the supplements are free too) . It has some rationalised systems (eg AC is ascending, races have classes) but it's still basically B/X D&D.
Also it has some things like nice encounter tables you can use in LL, B/X or BECMI.

The Cook Expert set has a nonsensical spell progression table for Clerics. Otherwise IMO B/X is better for a level 1-14 game.
Nonsensical in terms of which spells are at which level? Or is there something else I'm missing?

My copy is upstairs, but as I recall Clerics gain access to spell levels as follows:
Spell Level
1 - at 2nd level
2 - at 4th level
3 - at 6th level
4 & 5 - at 7th level.
(That's it).
A holdover from OD&D. I suspect the OD&D table was misprinted.

Ah, I see. Yes, it's
1 at 2nd level
2 at 4th level
3 & 4 at 6th level
I figured it had something to do with them not getting a spell at 1st level. But I suspect your assumption is as good as mine.

Except that the BFRPG is it's own sort of beast, built form Basic D&D and D&D 3.141, while LL really is the B/X rules with the slightest of legal tweaks (well, and the price list makes more sense than Moldvay's).

* The Mentzer Basic set (
BECMI) is perhaps the best introduction ever written to any edition of D&D. It does an extremely good job of explaining role-playing games to 10 year old kids.
I cannot agree with this more. It was a wonderful introduction to D&D. I don't know how Gygax expected someone to pick up the AD&D PHB (for instance) and start playing the game.

He didn't. That was why it was Advanced D&D. AD&D assumed that you had already had some experience with D&D, viz., Basic D&D!

Yeah. Posed a bit of a problem for us back then. AD&D was the only version available when we started. We did somehow muddle through, but it was painful.

I've been thinking a bit about that. Does it really make sense that platemail costs several times chainmail, as per AD&D & sequels? Apparently the labour involved in creating both is similar. OTOH, some goods like lanterns seem much too expensive.
A second point - LL's armour costs may be more sensible, but my Fighter in Akrasia's game is stuck with studded leather; in Moldvay he'd have platemail. The good AC in Moldvay I think is necessary considering how lethal combat is.

You know, I haven't really compared the armour prices. I was thinking more along the lines of other goods: everything in Moldvay costs at least 1 gp , whereas a lot fo small items cost only silver pieces in LL.
